HTML 5 – what’s all the fuss?

Posted by e-titans On September - 2 - 2010

I thought I would write a quick piece on why HTML 5 is getting people in the web world all excited. It has spent a long time on the drawing board but we are beginning to see some great examples of HTML 5 based websites. The standard has yet to be finalised but this hasn’t stopped some creative people making lovely new interfaces.

So what’s the fuss I hear you ask? People are making really great websites already using plug-ins and other great tools such as Adobe’s Flash and Google Gears. The main difference we will see is that HTML 5 has some new API elements that will allow a lot of this to be done without the need for 3rd party tools like Flash and Gears.

The new HTML 5 specification will allow for videos to be played back in a users browser, drag and drop should be achievable without the need for JavaScript. There are some new form elements that will handle time/dates, email addresses and colour picking.

We will also see HTML 5 drop some arcane elements that were thought to be a good idea back in the 1990′s however time has since told us that they aren’t mainly the “” tag!

I believe that HTML 5 is just an update that is moving with the times and including components that modern websites need as our connection speeds increase. We will be thoroughly looking forward to seeing websites that make use of the technology.

My Lucky Charms re-design goes live!

My Lucky Charms re-design goes live!
We are excited to announce the launch of the new-look My Lucky Charms website! The website has much-improved navigation and page layout together with the use of a custom e-Commerce system which we have developed from scratch allowing the client to specify their requirements without the need for any unnecessary admin features.

The site has a bracelet builder tool that allows visitors to design their bracelet online and either buy the bracelet or send the design to a friend. Visitors can click “Add to bracelet” to add charm beads to a bracelet. The bracelet builder also lets visitors save bracelets allowing for purchases or changes to be made at a later date.

The bracelet builder is an excellent example of how a website can harness the power of social networks to create awareness and let visitors do the promoting of your products.

We’d love to hear your feedback on this website. If you run a jewellery website and would like to see something similar to the bracelet builder put into your website please get in touch today.

WalkingFamilies.com launched for Summer

Summer sees the launch of WalkingFamilies.com.  The site sells downloadable maps which can be purchased and then printed out for family days out. All the walks have been tested by the author and have an excellent guide accompanying them.

The brief for the site was to be easy to navigate and allow for walks to be easily found by region. It had to be updateable by the client so that new walks could be added at any stage.

The site has recently been showcased in the Brighouse Gazette.

e-titans working with the NHS

e-titans have been working alongside the NHS with the design and development of two new HTML email templates.  The NHS provided the content for the two emails, giving us the simple brief of designing and creating a professional-looking finished product incorporating the colour scheme and branding of the NHS.

With no design in place for the emails, we put our creative thinking-caps on and got to work on designing a HTML email template which brought the content provided ‘to life’.

The two emails were of a similar look-and-feel to keep the design consistent and professional throughout.  The finished product had a clear layout with distinctive chunks of content and contrasting colours to allow easy reading.  One of our main focusses was on the accessible of the content, making sure the emails were readable by all including users who are visually impaired.  To achieve this we developed the emails using very clean, industry-compliant code as well as an accompanying text-only version.

The feedback we received for the two HTML email templates was excellent.  We look forward to working with the NHS in the future.

If you are thinking about email marketing, feel free to contact us to discuss how e-titans could help you.

ellistonSPORT goes from strength to strength

ellistonSPORT has been running for over a year now and in it we have seen the service grow from strength to strength since its initial inception.

What started out as a simple CMS for our local cricket club is now powering sport club websites all over the world.

We have also introduced a line of add-ons that add extra power to a club’s site at very little extra cost.

We hope that it continues to grow over the coming years and would like to thank all our clubs for their input in improving the system and making it better for everyone involved.

e-titans have been contacted by local councillors to work on the new Queensbury Village website. Queensbury is a large village in the southern district of Bradford with the ward population of over 13,000 according to the 2001 census.

The main aim of the site is to be a portal for local information so that it helps increase community involvement in the area.

We will be working closely with the local village committee to make sure that the site meets their expectations. We will of course keep you posted on more information as the project develops.

New Bradford Catholic Players website launched

The new-look Bradford Catholic Players has been launched. The site is to be a showcase of the upcoming productions of the Bradford Catholic Players society and also a portal where potential new members can find out about joining.

It was imperative that the members of the BCP could update their own website as and when needed. They also wanted a theatrical theme for the design of the site to help emphasize what they were about.

It was a pleasure to work with the BCP and their members in the construction of this project and we wish them all the best in their future work.
